Tom Gasek and Miki Cash conceived the Idea for “Ain’to No Fish” in the early 90’s while working together in the UK. Around this period catastrophic events at sea involving oil spills had been having devastating effects on wildlife and the sea, as they still do today.

They were influenced by the optimistic late 1940’s show tune “Some Days There Just Ain’t No Fish” Written by Carl Sigman and Bob Russell and performed by Hoagy Carmichael, which they felt would lend itself wonderfully to a contemporary Arctic setting while juxtaposing against the darker subtext within the film. (The film is based on hungry seals trying to fish in a world depleted of this natural resource due to man’s lack of respect for his environment.)

They began the animation production in the 90’s, however the filming was put on hold due to other work commitments around that time. Their enthusiasm for the film and idea didn’t wane and, 18 years later in 2012, the timing was good for the two film makers to resume work on “Ain’t No Fish”.

By this time advancements in computer technology and internet communication meant that they could work remotely from their respective homes; Tom in the US and Miki in the UK. It also allowed them to rethink how they would create the set and environments and not have to rely on using traditional 3-D sets.

The production took around 18 months with both of artists working simultaneously on shots and communicating via Skype, Drop-Box and email until the film’s completion in October 2013.
